A stunning hat-trick from Amad Diallo in the final eight minutes turned Thursday’s clash with Southampton into an unexpected 3-1 victory for Manchester United.
Southampton, who had managed just one goal in their previous six Premier League matches, surprisingly dominated much of the game and could have scored twice or even three times before breaking the deadlock in the 43rd minute.
United goalkeeper André Onana made crucial saves to deny Kamaldeen Sulemana, Mateus Fernandes, and Tyler Dibling. However, his efforts were undone when teammate Manuel Ugarte inadvertently turned a corner kick into his own net, adding to United’s growing struggles defending set pieces.
Southampton’s traveling fans sarcastically celebrated their rare goal at halftime, chanting, “We’ve scored a goal.” But despite their dominance, a combination of Onana’s brilliance and their own poor finishing left them with only a slim 1-0 lead heading into the final stages.
With ten minutes left, Amad Diallo came to United’s rescue once again. Pouncing on a fortunate deflection, the winger drilled an equalizer past Aaron Ramsdale. As the clock ticked into the final minute of regulation time, Amad played a slick one-two with Christian Eriksen before volleying United into the lead.
In stoppage time, the 22-year-old capitalized on a loose touch from Taylor Harwood-Bellis, completing his hat-trick and sealing a dramatic comeback for United.
