Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has effectively signaled the end of Casemiro’s time at the club with his team selection against Rangers on Thursday night.
Christian Eriksen and Toby Collyer were chosen to start in midfield alongside Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho, while Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte, who have been regular starters this season, were available from the bench. Casemiro, however, was left out entirely.
The Brazilian has not featured for United since the 2-0 defeat to Newcastle United in late December, a match marred by a poor performance against Joelinton, Sandro Tonali, and Bruno Guimarães. Since then, he has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia and the MLS, but no transfer has materialized.
With his contract running until 2026, United may look to offload him this month to ease concerns over Premier League profitability and sustainability rules, making it likely that Casemiro could leave in the summer if no deal is reached sooner.
Toby Collyer’s inclusion in the starting lineup for the Europa League match marked his first appearance in the competition, following solid performances against Arsenal and as a substitute in league matches against Southampton and Brighton. Collyer’s rise has been a reflection of his growing maturity, professionalism, and ability on the field, and he received a standing ovation in the 73rd minute, showing the fans’ appreciation.
Bruno Fernandes spoke highly of Collyer in an interview with MUTV, praising his attitude and professionalism: “Toby doesn’t need help, honestly. He’s a great kid and a great example of a professional. He trains at the maximum level every week and has huge qualities. He’s aggressive on and off the ball, class in tight spaces, and will only get better.”
Given Collyer’s emergence and Amorim’s apparent confidence in him, it seems clear that Casemiro’s time at Manchester United is nearing its end. A move away from Old Trafford this month seems increasingly likely, with Amorim already signaling his approval.
