Former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo has shared his thoughts on Nigeria’s group placement in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) draw, describing it as a stroke of bad luck.
The draw placed Nigeria in Group C alongside Tunisia’s Carthage Eagles, who were eliminated in the knockout stages of the last tournament in Ivory Coast.
Completing the group are two East African teams: Tanzania and Uganda, the 2016 CAF National Team of the Year.
Yobo expressed optimism about Nigeria’s chances but acknowledged the challenges posed by the group.
Yobo Confident in Nigeria’s Chances to Win 2025 AFCON in Morocco
Former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo has expressed confidence in Nigeria’s ability to claim the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title, highlighting the team’s potential and unity.
Speaking to journalist Babatunde Ojora, Yobo praised the current squad, emphasizing their cohesion and quality.
“We have a good crop of young players who have been together for a while, so I don’t think understanding is a problem for them,” he said.
Yobo also reflected on Nigeria’s near success at the 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast, where they finished as runners-up, and believes that experience will drive the team’s ambition in Morocco.
“We showed at the last AFCON that we were very unlucky not to win. If we can build on that momentum and push further, I believe we can reach the final and hopefully win it this time,” Yobo stated.
The 2025 AFCON is scheduled to take place from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, in Morocco.
