Arne Slot may face a goalkeeping dilemma this summer, but he made his admiration for Alisson clear following the Brazilian’s extraordinary performance in Liverpool’s 1-0 win over PSG.
While Harvey Elliott secured the match-winning goal, Alisson was undeniably the standout player, earning Man of the Match honors as Liverpool clinched an unexpected victory in Paris.
The goalkeeper made nine saves, according to FotMob, preventing the equivalent of 2.26 goals based on xG, in a match where PSG registered 27 shots on goal and Liverpool had only two. His vital contribution helped the Reds pull off a smash-and-grab triumph, and Slot made sure to praise his No. 1 after the game.
Speaking to TNT Sports, Slot expressed his admiration for Alisson, stating, “I don’t think I’ve worked with a goalkeeper who has played at this level – which is normal because he’s the best in the world. I’ve had some very good players as a manager, but never the best goalkeeper in the world, and I think he is. He showed that today.”
He continued, “I have experienced a few times when we’ve had to defend so much, but you normally come away with a 1-0 loss, or 2-0 or 3-0. To come away with a win here was probably a bit more than we deserved!”
Alisson’s performance comes ahead of what promises to be an interesting summer for Liverpool’s goalkeeping situation, with the arrival of Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia already confirmed. The Georgian is expected to join at the end of the season, and it’s likely that Caoimhin Kelleher will move on, though Mamardashvili has made it clear he doesn’t intend to come in as a backup.
However, there’s little debate about who is currently the better goalkeeper, and Alisson delivered a timely reminder of his quality on Wednesday night. Slot firmly believes Alisson is the best in the world, and his assessment is hard to dispute when the Brazilian is in such exceptional form.
As Elliott summed up after the match, “Without him, I don’t know where we would be.”
