Arsenal delivered a stunning 5-1 victory over Manchester City on Sunday afternoon, closing the gap to Premier League leaders Liverpool to just six points.
The hosts made a blistering start in north London, taking the lead within two minutes after capitalizing on an error from Manuel Akanji. The defender lost possession outside his own penalty area, allowing Martin Ødegaard to finish and send the Emirates Stadium into a frenzy.
David Raya kept Arsenal in front midway through the first half, making a remarkable reflex save to deny Josko Gvardiol’s header, which hit the woodwork. However, Arsenal should have extended their lead shortly after, with Kai Havertz squandering a golden opportunity from close range.
City showed moments of quality in the first half and equalized ten minutes after the break, as Erling Haaland converted a floated cross from Savinho with a precise header.
But Arsenal responded quickly, with two goals in quick succession. Thomas Partey’s deflected shot put the Gunners back in front just a minute after City’s equalizer, before Myles Lewis-Skelly produced a fine third goal just after the hour mark, even mocking Haaland’s meditation celebration.
The scoreline got worse for City 15 minutes from time as Havertz atoned for his earlier miss, finishing off a blistering counter-attack to make it 4-1.
There was still time for one more, as the dazzling Ethan Nwaneri added a fifth, cutting inside and curling a stunning left-footed strike into the far corner to complete the rout.
This heavy defeat means City could drop out of the top four if Chelsea beat West Ham United on Monday, while Arsenal’s commanding win keeps them in the hunt for the title, now just six points behind Liverpool.
