Aston Villa have turned down a surprise significant bid from Arsenal for star striker Ollie Watkins, according to multiple reports.
The Gunners had been in search of a “number nine” even before Gabriel Jesus suffered a serious knee injury earlier this month, but it seemed they would miss the chance to make a mid-season addition. Kai Havertz has played up front for much of the season, scoring 14 goals in all competitions, but Mikel Arteta has limited options as the season progresses.
Watkins has been in excellent form, scoring 10 Premier League goals for Villa this season, following a strong performance last year. According to Mail Sport, an initial offer from Arsenal was rejected. While the exact figures of the bid were not disclosed, Fabrizio Romano reported that the offer was valued at £60m. An improved offer is expected from Arsenal, who have also been linked with Benjamin Sesko and other targets.
Watkins has become one of the Premier League’s top forwards, continuing to impress since Unai Emery took charge of Villa in late 2022.
After a standout season at Brentford in the Championship in 2019/20, Watkins has consistently scored double-digit goals in the Premier League following his £33m transfer to Villa. The 2023/24 season has been a career-defining one for the striker, registering 19 goals and 13 assists as Villa achieved their best finish in 28 years and qualified for the Champions League. Watkins also made a key contribution for England at Euro 2024 and has continued his strong form this campaign.
