Atletico Madrid have reportedly added Rodrigo Bentancur to their list of transfer targets, joining his Tottenham Hotspur teammate Cristian Romero. This follows claims that Diego Simeone’s side is keen on both players.
Atletico Madrid, known for making high-profile Premier League signings, spent around £100m last summer to bring Julian Alvarez and Conor Gallagher to the Spanish capital from Manchester City and Chelsea, respectively.
Romero has long been on Atletico’s radar, but now Bentancur has emerged as another “key target,” according to The Times.

Bentancur, who joined Tottenham from Juventus in early 2022, has been a consistent starter under Ange Postecoglou. Despite competition from young prospect Archie Gray, Bentancur remains a vital part of Spurs’ midfield, and the club is reportedly in talks with his representatives over extending his contract, which runs until 2026.
While Bentancur served a seven-game ban for allegedly using a racial slur against Spurs captain Son Heung-min, Postecoglou has praised the midfielder, describing him as “an outstanding person” and “an unbelievable teammate.” On the field, Postecoglou believes Bentancur’s performances have “gone up a level.”
Tottenham are also keen to retain Romero, reportedly setting a £60m price tag on the centre-back, whose contract runs until 2027. Romero, however, has hinted at a potential move, stating earlier this week, “My focus is always on growing and looking for new places to continue developing. La Liga is a league I would love to play in and need to play in because it is the league that I lack.”
If Atletico get their way, both Romero and Bentancur could be playing in Spain next summer.
