Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez revealed that he was unaware of any transfer interest from other clubs during the January window, emphasizing that his focus has always been on staying at Barcelona.
Lopez has had to fight for a spot in Barcelona’s first team. Just in 2023, the energetic Spaniard was playing in the third division on loan at Linares.
In the summer of that year, Xavi Hernandez included Lopez in the pre-season squad, and his impressive performances earned him a competitive debut. Since then, he has made a strong case for a regular spot.
Part of Spain’s Euro 2024-winning squad, Lopez netted eight league goals last season and has already scored five this term under Hansi Flick’s management. Known for his late runs into the box from midfield, the 21-year-old reportedly attracted interest from both Manchester United and Aston Villa during the winter window, with both clubs willing to pay around €70m (£58m) for his services—but Barcelona firmly rejected any offers.
Lopez was taken aback by the reports. “I wasn’t aware of the offers,” he told SPORT. “I knew I wanted to stay here, but it’s comforting that the club didn’t want to listen to them and wanted me here, in the new project.”
As an academy product, Barcelona could have made a significant profit from any potential sale of Lopez, which would have helped the club’s financially strained situation. However, the Catalan giants clearly place trust in Lopez, a sentiment the player appreciates.
“I don’t know what to say,” he said gratefully. “I’m a hard worker, always available for the team. Xavi, [sporting director] Deco, and now Hansi are helping me and giving me the confidence to show my football. I’m very grateful to them.”
