Alphonso Davies’ dramatic 94th-minute goal spared Bayern Munich from a potential upset against Celtic, sending them through to the Champions League knockout stages after a 1-1 draw on Tuesday.
Bayern came out strong and could have easily taken the lead within the first ten minutes, but Celtic also had their chances. Callum McGregor was left frustrated after failing to capitalize on a promising opportunity just seven minutes in.
Nicolas Kuhn had a shot cleared off the line, and Daizen Maeda drilled wide soon after, with Celtic missing two of the best chances early on. Bayern’s Harry Kane hit the crossbar, and although the Germans remained ahead on aggregate, they were visibly frustrated when the referee blew for half-time.
Celtic adopted a more defensive approach after the break, and that strategy paid off when former Bayern player Kuhn seized on some poor defending from the Bundesliga side to give Celtic the lead on the night just after the hour mark.
Bayern had opportunities to respond, with Leon Goretzka heading wide of the post and Leroy Sane firing his effort off target soon after.
With seconds left in stoppage time, Celtic’s defense was finally breached. Kasper Schmeichel denied a point-blank header from Joshua Kimmich, but he was powerless to stop the rebound, which was bundled over the line by a fortunate Davies. The goal leveled the score on the night and secured Bayern’s 3-2 aggregate victory.
