Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti responded to questions about the future of Brazilian forward Rodrygo by noting that “many, many” players would love the opportunity to play for the reigning European and Spanish champions.
Rodrygo has been linked with a move to Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal this month, following reports suggesting that Al Ahli may make a record €300m (£250m) bid for his teammate, Vinicius Junior.
When asked about these rumours, Ancelotti gave a cryptic response: “What I see, as well as what I hear, is that there are many who would like to be in Rodrygo’s place, just like Vinicius’, because many players want to play for this club, in this team, with this shirt. Many, many.”
He added, “I don’t like to name names, but there are a lot of players who want to come here. Some, even, that nobody would suspect. This is the history and the strength of this club.”
Ancelotti also declined to confirm whether Real Madrid had completed their transfer business, saying they had settled with the current squad after multiple bids for Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold were rejected.
However, the veteran coach did acknowledge, “What I see is that those who are here are very happy and want to stay as long as possible. They want to win titles and contribute.”
Ancelotti also praised Rodrygo’s selflessness, especially his willingness to play out of position for the team. “He is a complete player, and although we know he prefers to play on the left, sometimes someone has to make sacrifices for the team. Rodrygo has always done that. He’s always put the team first.”
Following his press conference on Friday, Real Madrid were drawn against Manchester City in the inaugural Champions League knockout play-off round.
