Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has cautioned fans that Andre Onana may not be replaced this summer.
Scholes made the comments on TNT Sports following Onana’s two costly errors in the 2-2 Europa League quarter-final draw with Lyon on Thursday. The Cameroonian goalkeeper mishandled Thiago Almada’s inswinging free-kick to give Lyon the lead and later spilled a shot from Alexandre Lacazette, allowing Rayan Cherki to score a late equalizer.
Despite Onana’s mistakes, Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee both found the net to briefly put Ruben Amorim’s side ahead in the match, which is now finely balanced ahead of the second leg at Old Trafford next week.
When asked if United should replace Onana in the summer, Scholes said: “Yeah, I think it’s something they need to think about. But they need to look at the budget as well. Can you get away with not spending that money on a goalkeeper? He hasn’t been quite good enough, but it will come down to money and what Amorim has to spend.”
