The stage is set for this season’s Europa League semi-finals following a night of unforgettable second-leg action, headlined by Manchester United’s stunning comeback win over Lyon at Old Trafford.
With all eight quarter-finalists aware of their potential semi-final opponents, much of the focus was on whether struggling Premier League sides Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur could rise above their domestic woes to book a place in the last four.
United appeared to be in full control at half-time, holding a 2-0 lead over Lyon. But the French side came roaring back, turning the tie on its head and taking a 4-2 lead after Alexandre Lacazette calmly converted a penalty at the Stretford End.
Yet in true dramatic fashion, late goals from Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, and Harry Maguire secured an astonishing 5-4 win on the night and a 7-6 aggregate triumph for Erik ten Hag’s side.
The Red Devils will now face Athletic Club in the semi-finals after the Basque side ended Rangers’ campaign with a professional 2-0 win at San Mamés. Rising star Nico Williams was among the scorers, further strengthening his status as a top transfer target for Premier League clubs.
The second semi-final will see Tottenham Hotspur face Norwegian underdogs Bodo/Glimt. Spurs sealed their spot with a narrow 1-0 win over Eintracht Frankfurt in Germany, courtesy of a Dominic Solanke penalty that secured a 2-1 aggregate win—a significant milestone for manager Ange Postecoglou amid a challenging domestic season.
Meanwhile, Bodo/Glimt produced their own miracle comeback in Rome. Trailing Lazio 3-0 and seemingly out, Andreas Helmersen struck deep into extra time to force a penalty shootout. The Norwegian side held their nerve, winning 3-2 on spot-kicks after Lazio missed three of their five attempts.
The semi-finals promise more drama, with four teams now just two games away from European glory.
