Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed his disappointment after his team’s surprising 1-0 defeat to Plymouth Argyle in the FA Cup, admitting he was “hurt” by the loss. However, Slot acknowledged that Plymouth “deserved” their victory.
The match was decided when Ryan Hardie converted a penalty after the break, following a handball by Harvey Elliott inside the box.
Slot made 10 changes to the team that beat Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup earlier in the week and watched as his side struggled to assert dominance throughout the match.
“Plymouth played a great game,” Slot told ITV post-match. “They had a solid game plan and deserve full credit for their performance. We didn’t have a great day, and the result reflects that.”
He continued, “I can’t say the boys didn’t fight; they gave their all for 100 minutes. Neither team created many chances, and the game was ultimately decided by a penalty, which was correctly given as Elliott had his arms above his head.”
Slot went on to say, “In a match with so few chances, it all comes down to one moment, and today, that moment went to them. They deserved the win because they played really well.”
With key players like Virgil van Dijk, Ryan Gravenberch, and Mohamed Salah all rested and not traveling to the match, Slot’s side will now focus on their upcoming Premier League fixture against Everton. A victory would see Liverpool extend their lead at the top of the table to nine points.
