Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has confirmed that the team’s top scorer, Robert Lewandowski, will be available for Tuesday’s Champions League last-16 second-leg tie against Benfica.
The Polish striker was absent from the squad for the scheduled match against Osasuna on Saturday, which was ultimately postponed following the passing of team doctor Carles Minarro.
Looking ahead to the European clash with Benfica, Flick confirmed that Lewandowski would be part of the squad this week. “Lewandowski is back and available to play tomorrow,” the German coach said on Monday. “He is in top form. On Saturday, we decided to rest him. He felt some discomfort from fatigue in the training session before the game, and we chose to give him a break.”
Lewandowski, who has scored 34 goals in all competitions this season, has also been remarkable for his consistent presence in every matchday squad this year, featuring in all 41 games so far—an impressive feat for a 36-year-old. This durability, along with his continued effectiveness, has reportedly led Barcelona to decide to extend his stay for another season.
Flick emphasized the importance of staying focused as Barcelona seeks to secure their spot in the Champions League quarter-finals. The Catalans hold a narrow 1-0 advantage from the first leg in Lisbon, and the manager made it clear that his side cannot afford to take anything for granted. “We have to be 100% focused, and the best thing is not to dwell on the first leg,” Flick stated. “No one is assuming we’re through to the quarter-finals. We need to win.”
He also highlighted the challenge of facing Benfica, saying, “We need to put more pressure on Benfica and defend well. In Lisbon, we saw how dangerous they can be on the counter, so we have to be cautious. We must remain focused and have the right attitude to get the win. We’re preparing well for this important moment for the club.”
While Lewandowski will be available, Barcelona will be without centre-back Pau Cubarsi, who is suspended after receiving a red card in the first leg.
