Barcelona are not expected to face any issues securing a new long-term contract for key defender Jules Kounde, despite reports linking him with a move to Chelsea.
Chelsea are looking to strengthen their defense ahead of next season, with Benoit Badiashile and Tosin Adarabioyo not seen as top-level starters. The Blues have also struggled with right-back options, with Reece James even playing in midfield in recent weeks.
Kounde’s ability to play both centrally—where he impressed during his time at Sevilla—and on the right has made him an attractive target.
However, Marca reports that the France international has so far been encouraging Barcelona officials in early discussions about extending his contract, which currently runs until 2027. Kounde reportedly “wants to stay” and has “no intention of leaving” the club. The 26-year-old has played every match this season and started the majority of his 45 appearances.
Kounde feels valued under manager Hansi Flick and is seen as a great fit in the Barcelona squad. These factors have motivated him to pursue a new deal, with initial talks with sporting director Deco and the club’s leadership considered to have been positive.
In contrast, Kounde’s situation appears very different from that of vice-captain Ronald Araujo. Although Araujo recently signed a new contract, he has struggled to secure a regular place in the starting lineup since recovering from a long-term injury. Additionally, his relatively affordable release clause of €65 million makes it plausible that he could leave in the summer if a club triggers the clause.
Chelsea has not been heavily linked with Araujo, but that could change if they see him as a suitable option who meets their quality standards and ambitions.
