Former England international Karen Carney has ignited discussion by claiming Bruno Fernandes is the only “world-class” player in Manchester United’s current squad, calling it a “shocking” reality.
Speaking after United’s narrow 1-0 win over Fulham on Sunday at Craven Cottage, Carney highlighted Fernandes’ crucial role in the team. Lisandro Martinez scored the winning goal, helping United climb to 12th in the Premier League table, but Carney believes Fernandes remains the squad’s standout performer.
“Manchester United fans don’t even want to imagine where the club would be without him. He’s possibly the only world-class player in the team, which is shocking to think about,” Carney stated on TNT Sports.
Since joining from Sporting Lisbon in 2020, Fernandes has been instrumental for United, contributing 59 goals and 47 assists in 183 Premier League appearances, solidifying his importance to the team.
Despite the victory, United’s overall form remains a concern, with Ruben Amorim’s side trailing the Champions League spots by 12 points. Carney’s remarks highlight the disparity between Fernandes’ consistency and the struggles of his teammates, fueling debate about the squad’s quality.
