Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has matched Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal tally in his debut season at the club.
Mbappé scored twice in a 3-2 comeback victory over Leganes on Saturday. His penalty gave Madrid a 1-0 lead at the Santiago Bernabéu, but Leganes quickly equalized through Diego Garcia. Dani Raba then put the visitors ahead 2-1 before halftime.
After the break, Jude Bellingham pulled one back for Madrid, and Mbappé netted his second, bringing his total to 33 goals across all competitions this season. Only Chilean striker Iván Zamorano (37) has scored more in his first season with the Spanish giants.
“It’s very special,” Mbappé said to Real Madrid TV. “The most important things are those you achieve with the team, but scoring as many goals as Cristiano is always special. We all know what Cristiano means to Real Madrid, and to me.”
“We often talk, and he gives me advice. Scoring goals is great, but as I always say, we need to win trophies here.”
Mbappé’s 33 goals—22 of which have come in La Liga—have been scored in just 45 appearances.
