Qatar is reportedly keen to strengthen its Stars League and has set its sights on a summer move for Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric, according to recent reports.
The 39-year-old signed a one-year contract extension with Madrid at the end of last season and has continued to play a key role in Carlo Ancelotti’s midfield this season. Modric, who now ranks as the ninth-most capped player in Madrid’s history, also became the club’s oldest-ever appearance-maker and goalscorer earlier this season.
With no new midfield arrivals last summer to replace Toni Kroos, Ancelotti has relied on Modric to support players like Eduardo Camavinga, Aurelien Tchouameni, Dani Ceballos, and Jude Bellingham in the midfield.
Modric has expressed his desire to remain at Madrid for another season, aiming for a suitable retirement point after the 2026 World Cup. Ancelotti has also stated that the Croatian icon deserves to decide when to leave after 13 years of exceptional service.
However, Spanish outlet MARCA reports that no discussions have yet taken place between Modric and the club’s management about a contract extension. A similar situation unfolded at the end of the 2023/24 season before Modric eventually signed his extension.
While Modric’s increased role this season may lead to a new contract, suitors for the 39-year-old are beginning to emerge. Having witnessed the growing influence of the Saudi Pro League, Qatar is reportedly eager to enhance its own domestic league’s appeal. Modric is said to be one of the names under consideration for a potential summer move to the Qatar Stars League.
Other high-profile players such as Javi Martinez, Julian Draxler, Hakim Ziyech, and Modric’s former Madrid teammate Joselu currently play in the league.
