Manchester United have unveiled plans to construct a new 100,000-capacity stadium near their current Old Trafford ground.
Designed by architects Foster and Partners, the new stadium will feature an innovative umbrella design and a public plaza that is set to be “twice the size of Trafalgar Square.” The project aligns with the Government’s growth and regeneration initiatives for the local area.
United estimates the project could add £7.3bn to the UK’s economy, create nearly 100,000 jobs, and attract an additional 1.8 million visitors annually. The cost of construction is expected to be around £2bn, a hefty sum, especially considering the club is nearing £1bn in debt.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe commented: “Today marks the start of an incredibly exciting journey to deliver what will be the world’s greatest football stadium, at the heart of a revitalized Old Trafford. Our current stadium has served us brilliantly for 115 years, but it has fallen behind the best arenas in global sport. By building next to the existing site, we can preserve Old Trafford’s essence while creating a cutting-edge stadium that transforms the fan experience, just steps from our historic home.
“Equally important is the opportunity for the new stadium to drive social and economic renewal in the Old Trafford area, generating jobs and investment, not just during construction but long after the stadium district is completed. The Government has highlighted infrastructure investment as a key priority, particularly in the north of England, and we are proud to support that mission with this project of both national and local significance.”
United’s CEO, Omar Berrada, added: “Our long-term goal as a club is to have the world’s best football team playing in the world’s best stadium. We are grateful for the feasibility work done by the Old Trafford Regeneration Task Force, which examined options for the future of the stadium.
“After carefully reviewing its findings, as well as the feedback from thousands of fans and local residents, we have concluded that a new stadium is the right path forward for Manchester United and our community. We will continue to consult with fans and residents as we make our way toward final decisions.”
