Manchester United icon Denis Law has passed away at the age of 84, his family confirmed.
Law, who was recently diagnosed with dementia in December 2021, leaves behind an indelible legacy at Old Trafford, where two statues are dedicated to him. One of these statues is part of the iconic United Trinity, alongside Sir Bobby Charlton and George Best.
A statement from his family read:
“It is with a heavy heart that we tell you our father Denis Law has sadly passed away. He fought a tough battle, but finally, he is now at peace. We would like to thank everyone who contributed to his wellbeing and care, past and much more recently. We know how much people supported and loved him, and that love was always appreciated and made the difference.”
Law spent 11 successful years at Manchester United, scoring 237 goals in 404 appearances. He was also capped 55 times for Scotland, scoring 30 goals.
A key figure in United’s recovery after the Munich Air Disaster in 1958, Law won multiple trophies with the club, including two First Division titles, the European Cup, and the FA Cup. In 1964, he was awarded the prestigious Ballon d’Or.
Manchester United mourned his passing with a statement:
“Everyone at Manchester United is mourning the loss of Denis Law, the King of the Stretford End, who has passed away, aged 84. He will always be celebrated as one of the club’s greatest and most beloved players. The ultimate goal-scorer, his flair, spirit, and love for the game made him the hero of a generation. Our deepest condolences go out to Denis’s family and many friends. His memory will live on forever more.”
In addition to his legendary career at United, Law also played for Manchester City, Huddersfield Town, and Torino.
