Former Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi has weighed in on Arsenal’s managerial situation, suggesting that the club might need to reconsider its direction if Mikel Arteta fails to win the Premier League title this season.
Mikel Obi pointed out that Arsenal has invested heavily in the transfer market—reportedly around £800 million—since Arteta took over as head coach in December 2019.
Despite this significant spending, Arteta has yet to deliver a Premier League title, finishing as runners-up to Manchester City in the past two seasons.
Speaking on the Obi One Podcast, Mikel expressed doubt about Arsenal’s prospects this season, stating his belief that Liverpool is better positioned to claim the title.
“It’s Liverpool’s to lose,” he remarked. “While Arsenal has shown great progress, I don’t think they’ll win the league this season.”
He also underscored the importance of the coming season for Arteta’s future, saying, “If Mikel Arteta doesn’t win the league next season, it might be time for Arsenal to consider a change for the betterment of the club.”
As of now, Arsenal sits second in the Premier League standings, six points behind leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand after 20 matches.
