Former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is on the verge of making a managerial comeback, over three years after leaving Old Trafford. The Norwegian is preparing to take charge of Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas following productive discussions.
Solskjaer expressed his excitement about the new challenge as he prepares to take the helm. “I am very happy to be here,” he said. “It is great to have so many people here for this great club. We have had our first meetings. I am looking forward to starting my job. It is great to be in this great city.”
After leaving United during the 2021-22 season, Solskjaer had been linked with several roles, including a potential Premier League return with Wolves. However, he has now opted to continue his career in Istanbul, where he will have the chance to compete against former United manager Jose Mourinho, who leads Fenerbahce.
Besiktas, currently sitting sixth in the league, began the 2024-25 campaign with Giovanni van Bronckhorst as head coach. However, the former Rangers boss was dismissed after a poor run of results, with Serdar Topraktepe serving as interim manager since November. An official announcement of Solskjaer’s appointment is expected soon.
Besiktas boasts a strong Premier League presence, featuring players like former Arsenal defender Gabriel Paulista, ex-West Ham midfielder Joao Mario, and England international Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Despite a promising start, the team has struggled in the league and Europa League, leaving their European qualification hopes uncertain.
