The Premier League issued a statement on Saturday explaining why a penalty was not awarded against Manchester United during their 2-2 draw at Everton.
Referee Andy Madley initially pointed to the spot after Ashley Young was fouled by Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt. However, the VAR officials advised Madley to review the incident on the monitor, leading him to overturn his original decision.
The Premier League clarified the ruling in a statement:
“VAR reviewed the referee’s decision to award a penalty to Everton for a challenge by Maguire on Young. The review determined that no foul had been committed and recommended an on-field review. The referee then overturned his initial call, and play resumed with a drop ball.”
Everton fans booed Madley at the final whistle, and Young was seen in a lengthy conversation with the referee.
This wasn’t the only VAR-related controversy at Goodison Park. Beto’s opening goal was also reviewed, causing a four-minute delay, before an explanation was provided for why the goal stood.
