Paris Saint-Germain pulled off a stunning comeback to defeat Manchester City 4-2 in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Despite both teams struggling in Europe, this Matchday 7 clash lived up to its billing as a marquee event. PSG started brightly, with 19-year-old Désiré Doué testing Ederson early, while City looked threatening with their long-ball approach.
Kevin De Bruyne forced a save from Gianluigi Donnarumma, and Erling Haaland’s header was easily collected by the Italian keeper following clever play by Phil Foden. PSG’s disciplined pressing disrupted City’s buildup, making every forward move a challenge. A late first-half chance for Savinho was denied by Donnarumma after a slick City attack.
PSG thought they had taken the lead just before halftime through Achraf Hakimi, but VAR ruled out the goal for offside against Nuno Mendes in the buildup.
The second half was a completely different story. City looked in control after scoring twice early in the half, with Jack Grealish and Erling Haaland finishing close-range efforts. However, PSG responded immediately, leveling the score by the hour mark.
Bradley Barcola sparked the comeback, assisting Ousmane Dembélé for the first goal and then reacting quickest to convert Doué’s rebounded shot off the crossbar.
With momentum firmly on their side, PSG capitalized on City’s disarray. Joao Neves delivered the decisive blow, heading in from a free kick at the back post to make it 3-2. City, stunned and unable to regroup, conceded a fourth as Gonçalo Ramos rounded off the scoring with the last kick of the game.
Now, Guardiola’s side must secure a win on Matchday 8 to stay in contention for a playoff spot.
