Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Girona on Sunday saw the club set an unusual record.
Goals from Luka Modric and Vinicius Junior secured a dominant win that lifted Madrid back to second in the La Liga standings, level on points with Barcelona but behind on head-to-head.
As reported by MARCA, the match saw Madrid commit just one foul, marking a historic low for the club. Lucas Vazquez was the only player penalised, in the 36th minute, as the referee called only seven fouls on Girona throughout the game. Madrid’s total of eight fouls for the entire match was also the fewest in La Liga this season.
“We are happy because after the Champions League, there can always be ‘trap’ games,” manager Carlo Ancelotti commented after the match. “But the team started well, controlled the game, defended well, and although the pace wasn’t excessive, everything was under control. We played well.”
“We’re doing well. But today, the best news is [David] Alaba’s recovery. He played very well for 60 minutes, very comfortably. We’re starting to get key players back at the back.”
“I could rest [Federico] Valverde and [Antonio] Rudiger. We’re entering the most important part of the season in good shape.”
