Manchester United played out a 1-1 draw with Real Sociedad on Thursday night as Ruben Amorim’s side kicked off their Europa League Last 16 campaign.
With a weakened squad, United traveled to northern Spain, hoping to bounce back from their FA Cup exit at the hands of Fulham last weekend.
Joshua Zirkzee put United ahead early in the second half, having been slightly the better team up to that point. However, a somewhat fortunate penalty, converted by Mikel Oyarzabal, brought the hosts level midway through the second half.
Buoyed by the equalizer, Real Sociedad finished the game stronger, with Andre Onana making two key second-half saves, including one in stoppage time. With the tie evenly poised, the second leg at Old Trafford in a week’s time promises to be crucial.
