Real Madrid is reportedly considering the possibility of leaving LaLiga due to growing frustration over refereeing standards, with Jude Bellingham’s controversial red card against Osasuna further intensifying their dispute with the league.
Bellingham, the English midfielder, was sent off for alleged foul and abusive language towards referee José Luis Munuera Montero, a decision that Madrid vehemently disputes. The incident occurred during Madrid’s 1-1 draw with Osasuna, when Bellingham was shown a straight red card in the 39th minute. The referee’s report claimed Bellingham shouted “f*** you” towards him, but Bellingham maintains that he said “f*** off” in frustration at himself, not the official.
As a result, Bellingham now faces the possibility of a suspension of up to 12 matches, under Spanish FA rules that penalize players for insulting or offending referees.
Real Madrid has voiced repeated concerns over refereeing decisions, and this incident is just the latest in a series of controversial calls that have left the club feeling unfairly treated. Reports now suggest that Madrid could explore joining another top European league, such as Serie A, Ligue 1, or the Bundesliga. However, such a move would require approval from FIFA, UEFA, and the respective league.
The club’s frustrations with LaLiga have been escalating for months. Recently, Madrid filed a formal complaint with the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) over what they described as “serious refereeing behavior.” They specifically pointed to decisions like the controversial tackle by Espanyol’s Carlos Romero on Kylian Mbappé, which many felt warranted a red card, and the disallowed goal for Vinícius Jr., which Madrid believes was incorrectly ruled out.
In response, LaLiga president Javier Tebas dismissed Madrid’s complaints, accusing the club of failing to offer solutions and labeling their concerns as repetitive grievances from their media outlets.
With tensions reaching a boiling point, Real Madrid’s reported consideration of leaving LaLiga represents an unprecedented move. While such an exit would present logistical challenges, the club’s global stature could make them an attractive addition to another major European league.
