Ruben Amorim has admitted that he will not be afforded the luxury of time to turn things around at Manchester United, acknowledging the growing pressure to achieve immediate results.
United’s two-game winning streak before the international break came to an end on Tuesday as they were beaten 1-0 by a strong Nottingham Forest side, with former Red Devil Anthony Elanga scoring the only goal of the match.
Defending the club’s decision to let Elanga go in the summer of 2023, Amorim emphasized that Manchester United cannot afford to wait indefinitely for players or managers to come good.
“We’re talking about a lot of players who were at Manchester United and are doing well now, but they had the chance here,” said Amorim, referencing comments about Marcus Rashford and Antony’s success elsewhere. “At United, you don’t have the time. I won’t have the time. We have to get it right, fast.”
He continued, “The pressure at United is immense. Sometimes, you don’t have time to let players develop, and for that, you need a strong foundation. If that’s missing, we can’t help our young players. They had their chances, and the pressure of playing for Manchester United can be overwhelming.”
While Elanga impressed for Forest, United’s wings struggled, with Alejandro Garnacho coming under fire from fans.
“He’s doing everything he can,” Amorim said of the Argentine. “He’s trying. Sometimes, you might have one good day, but in the final third, it doesn’t always work out, and that can happen.”
He added, “The most important thing is that when he needs to track back, he’s doing it. Of course, we want him to excel in one-on-one situations. Sometimes, he tries too much. But I think he wants to help the team and do his best. Even if he doesn’t always make the best decisions, you can’t point the finger at any player today.”
