Ruben Amorim has openly suggested that Manchester United’s current squad could be the weakest in the club’s illustrious 147-year history.
The manager voiced his frustrations after a disappointing 3-1 home defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion, marking United’s sixth home loss of the season. The defeat came just days after Amad Diallo’s late hat-trick against Southampton narrowly spared the club further embarrassment. Goals from Yankuba Minteh, Kaoru Mitoma, and Georginio Rutter, aided by a costly mistake from goalkeeper Andre Onana, sealed United’s latest setback.
Speaking to the media post-match, Amorim didn’t hold back:
“In ten Premier League games, we’ve won two. Imagine what this feels like for a Manchester United fan—or for me. We’ve brought in a new coach, and I’m losing more games than the previous one. I’m fully aware of that.
“I won’t change my stance, no matter what. I believe we can succeed, but right now, we need to survive this moment. I’m not naive. We need to accept where we are.
“We might be the worst team in Manchester United’s history. I know that’s a headline, but I’m saying it because we have to acknowledge it and change it. There’s your headline.”
Amorim further elaborated on the team’s struggles, stating:
“It’s hard to explain. We need to face the reality of our situation instead of avoiding it. Everyone here is underperforming, regardless of the circumstances. For any Premier League club, losing this many games is unacceptable—let alone Manchester United.
“Our players are nervous and anxious. When they step onto the pitch, they’re haunted by the results of previous games. I feel it, and the players feel it even more. The only solution is to keep working hard and start winning games.”
Amorim was appointed to revive United’s fortunes following Erik ten Hag’s dismissal in October. However, his tenure has been underwhelming, with just five wins in 15 matches across all competitions and seven losses. Fans and critics alike are left questioning whether the club’s struggles can be turned around anytime soon.
