Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has reaffirmed his admiration for Mason Mount, stressing that the midfielder will not be rushed as he nears a return after a three-month injury layoff.
The 26-year-old was forced off early in December’s Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium, having impressed Amorim during the early weeks of his tenure. It marked another setback in a frustrating 19 months for Mount, who has made just 22 Premier League appearances for United due to various injuries—a significant blow considering the £55m investment United made in him.
Amorim, who has previously spoken about his “love” for Mount, confirmed the former Chelsea midfielder is expected to be in United’s squad for Sunday’s Premier League match against Leicester City after returning to training. In his pre-match press conference, Amorim again spoke highly of Mount.
“I really love Mason Mount,” said Amorim. “I see what he’s been through. He does everything right—he eats well, his physical condition is perfect. He’s trying too hard, maybe overthinking things.
“He’s a European champion and a great talent. When a player puts in the effort that he does, he will always have the support of everyone here at the club. We’ll manage his load carefully.
“We need players like Mason Mount. I think he’ll be on the bench, but we’ll see. We need him, and if he’s fit, I’ll use him. Even five minutes from Mason Mount would be perfect.”
Amorim: Mount’s Return Will Be Gradual
Mount has played just 403 minutes of football across all competitions this season, with his thigh injury following an early-season hamstring issue.
Amorim acknowledged United’s busy schedule and existing injury concerns, confirming that Mount will be slowly reintegrated into the team to avoid further setbacks.
“With all the competitions, we need to rotate,” said Amorim. “We’re taking risks with some players, like Casemiro, who was extremely tired.
“We didn’t want to risk Ugarte against Real Sociedad. It was a decision based on the competition: Ugarte wanted to stay, and we have Mount, who will return slowly. Kobbie [Mainoo] may return in a few weeks, but I’m not sure yet.
“Harry Maguire, who we tried not to risk, we’ll see about Sunday. We need all our players, and I think against Lyon in the Europa League quarter-finals, it will be a different type of game. The physical demands will be much higher, and we have tough Premier League games ahead as well.”
