Monday’s four scheduled Serie A fixtures have been postponed in the wake of Pope Francis’s death, which was confirmed by the Vatican on Monday morning. The Pope passed away at the age of 88, shortly after being discharged from hospital following a five-week battle with an infection.
The affected fixtures—Torino vs Udinese, Cagliari vs Fiorentina, Genoa vs Lazio, and Parma vs Juventus—were all set to be played on Easter Monday, a national holiday in Italy. The league’s governing body has announced that the matches will be rescheduled, with new dates to be confirmed in due course.
Pope Francis, who became the head of the Catholic Church in 2013 following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI, was an avid football fan throughout his life and a lifelong supporter of Argentine club San Lorenzo.
