Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti singled out forward Kylian Mbappé for praise following their 5-2 loss to Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final on Sunday.
Despite expressing disappointment over his team’s overall performance, Ancelotti was impressed with Mbappé’s contributions, including a brilliant early goal and winning a penalty for Los Blancos during the match in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Mbappé opened the scoring in the 5th minute, giving Real Madrid an early advantage. However, Barcelona responded emphatically, with goals from Lamine Yamal, Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, and Alejandro Balde putting the Catalan side in control by halftime. Raphinha added a fifth goal shortly after the break, while Rodrygo managed a consolation goal for Real Madrid.
Reflecting on the match, Ancelotti said:
“The game was not good from the first minute to the last. With an extra man, we were not able to find solutions. I’m sad about the game as a whole. I can’t take anything away from it except Mbappé’s performance, who scored a great goal in a good move. We have to forget about the rest and look forward.”
Real Madrid will look to bounce back when they face Celta Vigo in the Copa del Rey on Thursday.
