Super Eagles legend Finidi George has come to Kelechi Iheanacho’s defense, criticizing Sevilla for their handling of the Nigerian striker during his difficult spell at the club.
Iheanacho’s Struggles
The 28-year-old joined Sevilla as a free agent during the summer but has struggled to find form and consistent game time. This season, he has made just 11 appearances, scoring three goals.
In recent weeks, Iheanacho has been left out of Sevilla’s matchday squad for five consecutive games. Head coach García Pimenta recently expressed confusion over Iheanacho’s lack of form but dismissed any claims suggesting the player was out of shape.
Finidi George’s Remarks
Speaking to Africa Foot, former Super Eagles coach and Real Betis winger Finidi George expressed disappointment in Sevilla’s treatment of Iheanacho and suggested the striker should consider leaving the club to revive his career.
“I think they have disrespected him in many ways,” Finidi said. “They had high expectations when he arrived, but it’s still early days, and he hasn’t been given enough time to settle.”
Finidi advised Iheanacho to seek a fresh start elsewhere:
“In my opinion, he should leave the club if any good offers come along. At 28, he still has so much to offer, but he needs to be at a place where he is truly appreciated.
“A return to England would be a great option, but he could also explore opportunities in new environments.”
The Bigger Picture
As Iheanacho navigates this challenging phase of his career, Finidi’s comments highlight the need for the player to find a club where he can rediscover his form and confidence.
