Barcelona president Joan Laporta has spoken out about the “sudden” death of the club’s first-team doctor, Carles Minarro Garcia.
Garcia tragically passed away on Saturday morning, just hours before Barcelona’s La Liga match against Osasuna. The game was subsequently postponed, with the Blaugrana announcing the news 20 minutes before kick-off.
In a statement on Saturday evening, Laporta confirmed that Garcia died earlier in the afternoon “at the team’s training camp,” describing the loss as “sudden and very sad.”
“Today, we lost a man who was loved by everyone at Barcelona,” Laporta told the club’s website. “He passed away this afternoon during the team’s gathering at the hotel. As you can imagine, the players, coaching staff, and everyone are very sad.”
“He was a man who traveled to every match to care for the players, coaching staff, and anyone in need. He never said no to anyone. A great professional, a great doctor. What happened is heartbreaking.”
“This is devastating news. We are in a state of shock because it was so sudden.”
Garcia is survived by his two children, Gerard and Ana.
