The World Cup, set to take place across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, will align with Messi’s 38th birthday—adding more weight to the question of whether the Argentine legend will return for one last run.
Though he previously hinted that Qatar 2022—where he led Argentina to World Cup glory—would be his final appearance, Messi has continued to represent his national team since that triumph.
Inter Miami head coach and former teammate Javier Mascherano has expressed hope that Messi will be available for the 2026 campaign.
What Messi Said About His 2026 World Cup Chances
Speaking to Simplemente Fútbol, Messi admitted that the thought of playing in the 2026 tournament lingers in his mind, but he’s not ready to make any promises.
“I think about it and wait and see, but I don’t want to set that goal either,” Messi said. “I’ll take it day by day and see how I feel physically, and be honest with myself.”
He added that although the tournament seems far off, time moves fast — and this year will be key in determining if he can maintain his fitness and performance.
“This year is important—to be able to play consistently and feel good. Last year, I missed games due to injuries or not feeling 100%. This time, pre-season went well, I started strong, and I’m feeling good.”
However, he emphasized the challenges of the upcoming schedule, mentioning that the season runs through December without a break in June, and includes the Club World Cup.
What’s Next for Messi?
Messi could return to action for Inter Miami in their MLS clash against the Columbus Crew this Saturday in Cleveland. After that, he’s expected to play in the Concacaf Champions Cup semi-final first leg against the Vancouver Whitecaps on April 24.
He recently sat out of Argentina’s World Cup qualifiers, with head coach Lionel Scaloni stressing the importance of patience when it comes to Messi’s future with the national team.
